Billy Porter has officially signed on as executive producer for the Oscar-eligible documentary short Freeman Vines. The film, directed by Andr Robert Lee and Tim Kirkman, explores the life of 82-year-old Freeman Vines, a sculptor and luthier from rural Fountain, North Carolina. Vines is known for crafting guitars from wood sourced from a tree tied to the lynching of a young Black man, Oliver Moore.
The documentary delves into Vines philosophy, humor, and reflections on the enduring impact of racism in the American South, while chronicling his struggles with multiple myeloma and diabetes later in life.
Porter commented, Freeman Vines was an extraordinary and fiercely independent soul. This film beautifully expresses his story. He faced challenges in his community and history but lived with a freedom and authenticity that is inspiring. Freeman Vines offers a deep reflection on human connection, resilience, and creativity. Im proud to contribute to this project and eager for audiences to experience it.
The film has received top honors at several Academy-qualifying festivals, including the Tallahassee Film Festival, and has been screened at Tribeca, RiverRun, and the Florida Film Festival, along with other notable festivals like Woodstock, Nantucket, Indy Shorts, and SCAD Savannah. Switchboard Magazine acquired the film earlier this year, making it available to view on their YouTube channel.
Freeman Vines is produced by Porters company, Incognegro, alongside Gill Hollands The Group Entertainment, Lees Many Things Productions, Kirkmans T42 Entertainment, and the Music Maker Foundation.
Directors Lee and Kirkman shared, Collaborating with Billy Porter on Freeman Vines is an honor. His talent and influence will help bring Freemans remarkable story to a wider audience.
Switchboard founder Celia Aniskovich added, Freeman Vines captures the intersection of music, art, race, and spirituality. Billy Porters involvement helps us introduce this deeply moving story to more viewers as part of our awards campaign.
The short is part of Switchboards awards slate, alongside other Oscar-eligible films Poreless, Rat Rod, and Saving Superman.
