Brigitte Bardot has opened up about her lifelong struggle with depression and her attempts to end her life, revealing that a miracle kept her alive. The 91-year-old French actress shared her story in a new documentary, Bardot, which premiered in France on December 3.
In the film, Bardot reflects on the loneliness she experienced after becoming an international star and how she managed the pressures of being a 1960s sex symbol. She confessed that the sadness she felt during her peak fame continues to affect her today, saying, Every morning I wake up, and I am sad.
Despite her challenges, Bardot emphasized that her love for animals has been a constant source of comfort. I dont care if people remember me. What I would really like is for people to remember the respect we owe to animals, she said. The more I advance in my life, the more I fear humans. Im more animal than human.
The documentary arrives a few months after Bardot spent nearly three weeks hospitalized in Toulon, France, for health reasons, including minor surgery. Following this, she reassured the public that she was doing well and had no plans to step away from life.
Bardots career began as a model at age 15 and quickly transitioned into acting, with her breakout role in Marc Allgrets Les Lauriers sont coups. She rose to global fame in the 1950s and 60s, starring in iconic films such as And God Created Woman (1956) and The Truth (1960), and later appeared in her first Hollywood movie, Dear Brigitte (1965) alongside James Stewart.
After retiring from acting, Bardot focused on animal advocacy, founding the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in 1986 to protect both wild and domestic animals. Her later years have also been marked by public controversies related to her outspoken views.
Throughout the documentary, Bardot shares a candid and emotional account of her life, highlighting both the hardships and the moments of personal significance, particularly her devotion to animal welfare.
