Cathedral music director fired following controversy over 'inappropriate' song

Bangor Cathedral has removed its music director, Joe Cooper, following a controversial song performed by the choir during a service. The incident, which occurred on 31 August, prompted a disciplinary review and led to Cooper's dismissal, confirmed on Friday.

The choir not only performed the contentious piece but also staged a walkout in protest of possible staff reductions. Despite his termination, Cooper was acknowledged for his contributions to the cathedral's musical life.

The demonstration arose after the cathedral announced plans to potentially cut up to two-thirds of its workforce. Cooper described being informed of his dismissal on Wednesday as "extremely disappointing" on both a personal and professional level. He indicated he may seek legal guidance and request a review of the decision.

He criticized the cathedral for an "apparent reluctance" to collaborate on resolving financial challenges, stating this left him no choice but to speak publicly. Cooper rejected claims that his actions harmed the cathedral, highlighting that his efforts helped raise funds to prevent some of the job losses.

Cooper also mentioned the emotional toll of the situation, noting that there had been "much hurtful and unfair commentary" online targeting him and the choir.

He expressed hope that his departure might bring closure for some in the cathedral community, while also offering support for those who view his dismissal as unjust.

The cathedral stated: "After a comprehensive disciplinary process, including investigation into serious breaches of confidentiality and data protection during the redundancy process, as well as conduct during the service on August 31, the decision has been made to dismiss Joe Cooper from his role as music director effective immediately."

"The chapter acknowledges Joes important contributions to the cathedrals music, particularly in creating and performing choral works in Welsh, and in maintaining high standards within the choir during his tenure."
