Couple's holiday proposal with 'Mr Zippy' Santa becomes internet sensation

Charlotte Busby, 36, from Wrexham, was left stunned when her boyfriend, Matthew Gavan, 36, surprised her with a romantic proposal at Manchesters Christmas Markets, right under the towering, illuminated Father Christmas figure known as Mr Zippy.

Charlotte, who had planned a festive outing with Matthew, admitted she was completely unprepared for the proposal. "He knew exactly what would make it special for me, but I never expected this," she laughed. "I just froze."

The couple, who met via social media just four months ago, have had a whirlwind romance. Charlotte shared with BBC Radio Manchester that she had never felt more excited for the holiday season.

Matthew had initially hoped to propose under a grand Christmas tree, but when he couldnt find the perfect spot, he decided Mr Zippy would be the next best option.

"I thought we were just going to take a photo with Father Christmas," Charlotte recalled. "Then he got down on one knee, and I could see him silently asking me to say yes. Of course, I did."

The entire moment was a blur for Charlotte, who is grateful that passersby captured photos and videos of the event. The footage has since gone viral, drawing thousands of views on social media.

Matthew revealed that he had asked Charlottes father for permission earlier in the week, which was granted, and then carefully planned the Saturday proposal. "Charlotte adores Christmas, so the Christmas Markets felt like the perfect place," he explained.

The couple is now looking forward to a "magical" holiday season and hope to tie the knot in 2027.

Charlotte described the proposal as a dream come true, set in a city she loves during her favorite time of year. "It brings out my inner childmy kids say I get more excited than them," she said.
