Wagner Moura Discusses Brazilian Fascism Legacy at IndieWire Honors: 'Let's Stay True to Our Values'

Wagner Moura, the lead actor in the upcoming film The Secret Agent, was honored with the Performance Award at IndieWire Honors on December 4, held at Nya West in Los Angeles. Moura brought a mix of energy and gravity to the stage, performing a samba as he approached the microphone before delivering a heartfelt speech on the enduring impact of fascism in Brazil.

The Secret Agent takes place in 1977 during Brazils 21-year military dictatorship. Moura portrays a professor striving to survive the oppressive regime. Director Kleber Mendona Filho, acclaimed for Aquarius and Bacurau, attended the ceremony, and Moura acknowledged him during his acceptance speech.

Hes exceptional, Moura said of Filho. A remarkable Brazilian artist and a true friend. He also expressed gratitude to the films distributor Neon and to Brazilian audiences who supported the movie, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival before its U.S. release in November.

Being surrounded by so many artists I respect is incredible. Thank you, Neon, for your dedication and effort in bringing this Brazilian film to life. I also want to thank my friends, my family, and Brazilians everywhere who see themselves represented in this story. It means a great deal to us, Moura added.

Drawing parallels between his life and his character, Moura reflected on being born during the military dictatorship and the challenge of maintaining personal values under authoritarian rule. He offered a hopeful perspective on Brazils present state while subtly touching on political matters abroad.

Im proud to say Brazilian democracy is thriving today. There is hope. Lets all stay true to our principles, he said.

After the Cannes premiere, Moura won the festivals Best Actor award for his performance in The Secret Agent. He has also been nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance at the Gotham Awards and received the New York Film Critics Circle Best Actor award.

The IndieWire Honors event featured an intimate cocktail reception and award ceremony on December 4. Additional coverage from the evening includes interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, and full footage of Mouras acceptance speech.
