On the first Monday of December, coinciding with the first workday after Thanksgiving, New York Citys film community gathered at Cipriani Wall Street for the Gotham Film Awards. Seen as the seasons opening live awards event, the ceremony set the tone for the months ahead with a glamorous evening celebrating cinematic achievements.
This year, the nominations were dominated by Paul Thomas Andersons One Battle After Another, which received six nods and won the evenings top honor: Best Feature.
Although larger studio and streaming projects, including After the Hunt, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Song Sung Blue, Frankenstein, Sinners, Hedda, and Jay Kelly, were recognized, smaller independent films captured many of the nights key wins. Notable successes included Jafar Panahis It Was Just an Accident with three awards, as well as My Fathers Shadow and Pillion.
For the first time, the Best Feature category expanded from five to ten nominees in the 2025 season. While Andersons film was among the contenders, the list also featured strong independent titles such as East of Wall, Lurker, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, and Train Dreams.
Nominations are selected by committees of critics, journalists, festival programmers, and curators, while separate juries of industry professionals, including writers, directors, actors, producers, and editors, determine the winners.
