Donyelle Jones, Finalist on 'So You Think You Can Dance', Passes Away at Age 46

Donyelle Jones, a standout finalist on the second season of So You Think You Can Dance in 2006, has passed away at the age of 46. The news was shared on her official Instagram account, which revealed that she transitioned on Tuesday, December 2, at 8:34 a.m., after nearly a decade-long battle with cancer.

Jones was first diagnosed with stage 3c breast cancer in 2016, which later advanced to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. In a tribute, she was remembered as A wife. A daughter. A sister. A friend. And a warrior who kicked cancers ass every single day she was here Her spirit never dimmed. Her heart never hardened. And even in the storm, she never lost her smile.

She gained widespread recognition after competing on Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance, captivating audiences with her dynamic hip-hop and jazz-inspired performances. Jones ultimately placed third, behind winner Benji Schwimmer and runner-up Travis Wall.

Throughout her cancer journey, Jones openly shared updates about her health on social media. Her treatments included a double mastectomy and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. In May 2025, she posted from her hospital bed, describing some near deadly experiences she faced over the years and noting that her health had been declining for more than seven months. She asked her followers for prayers, saying, If youre a believer in the power of prayer. I need all of them. Love you all.

Despite her struggles, Jones celebrated a personal victory in July when she led her first dance class in four years. She described dance as the vehicle Ive used most to help me live out my purpose, pursue my dreams, heal my pain and celebrate my victories. She also reflected on the impact of cancer, stating it had taken much from her but reaffirming her commitment to embrace what dance could still bring into her life.

Just six days before her passing, Jones shared an emotional video explaining that she had begun putting her affairs in order and had accepted whatever was ahead. [Ive done] everything possible to extend my time in this dimension and at this point I have surrendered to whatever Gods will is, she said.

Following the announcement, tributes poured in from fans and fellow performers. Yvette Nicole Brown wrote, She was and IS the best of us. One of one. We love you @donyelledenise8! Thank you for showing us how to live and fight and love! We will see you on the other side. Brian Friedman added, We love you Donny. Now and forever. Fellow alum Blake McGrath said, Donny, you are watching over us all just like you did on earth. You are an angel now and forever. You left this world so much brighter, I love you. Chrissy Metz shared, May your transition be full of love and light just as you were here on this earth. Rest high on that mountain, Donyelle.
