A historic Hollywood-era property in Santa Barbara has been listed for $8.25 million, offering a rare glimpse into the life of screen legend Jane Russell. The 1.36-acre estate, located at 2934 Torito Road, was once home to the actress renowned for her performances alongside Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Clark Gable in The Outlaw during the 1940s and 1950s. Russell, who passed away in 2011, left behind a cherished legacy preserved in this distinctive retreat.
Unique Features and Layout
One standout feature of the estate is a sky bridge connecting different parts of the grounds. According to Compass listing agent Katherine Blackwood, Theres a runoff creek beneath the bridge active during the rainy season, and a newly planted fruit grove with a fountain and lanai.
The property comprises three structures: the main house, a guesthouse, and a studio apartment above the garage. The main residence spans 3,678 square feet, while the guesthouse offers about 1,000 square feet with one bedroom. The studio apartment provides additional space for guests or creative projects. The original guesthouse retains its rounded exterior and vaulted ceilings, Blackwood noted. From there, the bridge leads to features like a sports court and pool.
Expansion and Renovations
The estate was transformed from a single-family home into a multi-structure compound by Russells husband. He expanded the upstairs of the main house, originally a single master suite, and built the garage-top studio, preserving the propertys original charm while adding functionality. The views are incredible, making the expansion feel natural, Blackwood added.
Main House and Outdoor Amenities
The main residence includes six bedrooms and six bathrooms, boasting high ceilings, abundant natural light, and two fireplaces. The interior layout seamlessly connects to the outdoors. Exterior finishes combine wood and cement siding, framed by mature trees.
Outdoor amenities include a pool, spa, hot tub, open patio, lawn areas, fruit trees, and a deck with a built-in grill. An irrigation system supports the landscaping, and the grounds offer scenic views of the surrounding foothills.
Prime Location
Situated in Toro Canyon, the estate balances privacy with accessibility. It is minutes from beaches, local schools, equestrian centers, racquet facilities, and Santa Barbaras dining and shopping areas. The location offers notable canyon and mountain vistas. The 59,242-square-foot lot features mostly level terrain, surrounded by scenic foothills. The estate last changed hands 15 years ago.
