Her Radio City Rockettes Audition Led to Confronting Rejection, Followed by More Disappointment a Year Later (Exclusive)

Alicia Mae Holloway tried out for the Radio City Rockettes twice, first in 2021 and again in 2022, but did not secure a spot either time. Her initial attempt ended in disappointment when she was eliminated during the first round, marking her first experience with professional rejection. Despite the setback, she returned the following year and is now considering a third audition in the future.

Reflecting on her first audition in 2021, Holloway recalls entering the room with optimism and energy. She had recently left the Dance Theater of Harlem and was eager to explore new opportunities in her career. Although joining the Rockettes was not her long-time dream, she was excited when her agent informed her that the company had invited her to try out.

"I saw it as a completely new adventure, something different from my usual routine," Holloway said. "I was thrilled and couldn't wait to experience it."

However, her excitement was short-lived. After just one day, she was cut from the auditions. Even with six years of professional experience under her belt, Holloway faced rejection for the first time. "It was the first audition I had ever been cut from, and it was a tough moment," she admitted. She spent the evening processing her emotions with a phone call to her father and eventually composed herself, using the experience as motivation to try again.

Holloway appreciated the audition process despite the outcome. She enjoyed learning the precise jazz routines and found the combination of new techniques and familiar flair refreshing. The high-pressure environment also left a lasting impression, highlighting the intensity of competing for such a prestigious group.

After her first rejection, Holloway felt determined to return the following year. Although the feedback she received did not include specific technical corrections, it encouraged her to continue pursuing the opportunity.

In 2022, she went through both days of the audition without being cut, but she ultimately never received a final decision. While she did not join the Rockettes, the second experience was affirming, leaving her confident in her abilities and open to auditioning again in the future.

"Rejection can redirect you toward growth," Holloway reflected. "Even though it was disappointing, it guided me toward experiences where I could develop and thrive. I might try again in the spring."
