During my college years, I picked up vaping just as it was gaining popularity, despite never having smoked before. Over nearly eight years, it became a costly habit that took a toll on both my finances and well-being. Quitting has been a challenge, but the benefits have been undeniable.
My first encounter with a vape was at my senior year homecoming dance in 2017. I noticed a group of classmates sharing a small device that resembled a USB stick. Curious, I asked about it and learned it was called a Juul, a cigarette alternative. Intrigued, I decided to try it, and soon I was hooked.
Initially, I picked up vaping with the intention of helping a friend avoid traditional smoking. It seemed harmless because there was no tobacco, and the flavors were appealing. I quickly bought my own, enjoying the social and recreational aspects without realizing the addictive nature of nicotine.
Pod-based vapes were extremely popular on campus, easy to share, and discreet. Many students, including myself, would use them in bathrooms or carry them everywhere. The convenience made it hard to recognize how dependent I was becoming on nicotine.
The financial cost was significant over time. Early on, a pack of four vape pods cost around $25, which felt manageable. Later, disposable vapes became common at roughly $30 each. Regular purchases added up, impacting my budget and my health. Repeated attempts to quit often lasted only a few days due to withdrawal symptoms.
The turning point came when my health seriously suffered, making it difficult to breathe. In May, I discarded my last vape and have stayed nicotine-free since then.
The improvements have been noticeable. Financially, Ive saved over $900 in just six months. Physically, my energy levels have increased, my resting heart rate has improved, and I no longer wake up craving a vape. While cravings occasionally surface, especially during stress or boredom, the commitment to a nicotine-free life has been rewarding for both my body and my wallet.
