Independent map store commemorates 50 years

An iconic independent store known for its extensive range of maps and travel guides has reached its 50-year milestone. Established in 1975 in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire, The Map Shop began as a personal passion project and has grown into one of the largest map retailers in the UK, offering over 55,000 different titles.

The store continues to be managed by Tony Atkinson, a lifelong map lover and former land surveyor. Despite the widespread use of digital navigation, he emphasizes the lasting importance of traditional paper maps. "Everyone still needs maps," he remarked. "When your GPS battery dies, youll be grateful for a reliable map."

The shop carries maps from countries across the globe, catering to collectors and travelers alike. Mr. Atkinsons fascination with maps started at the age of four, when his father, who had served in the RAF, showed him a map of Germany. "That first map completely captivated me," he said. "I wondered how all of that information could fit on a single sheet of paper. From that moment, I was hooked."

Customers and local residents visited the store to join in celebrating this significant anniversary, showing their support for a local institution that has become a cornerstone for map enthusiasts throughout the UK.
