International Documentary Association Criticizes Proposed Netflix-WB Merger, Warning of Negative Impact on the Future of Documentary Filmmaking

The International Documentary Association issued a strong warning about the planned merger of Netflix and Warner Bros, arguing that the deal would endanger the future of nonfiction filmmaking. According to the organization, which supports documentary creators through advocacy and grants, the union would merge two of the most influential distributors of documentary content: Netflix and HBO Max.

The IDA stated that the merger poses an immediate threat to filmmakers by limiting creative opportunities and restricting the ability to tell vital stories. It also warned that the consolidation would narrow the diversity and quality of documentaries available to global audiences. The group emphasized that Netflixs dominant market position would suppress competition, impede free expression, and reduce viewer choice.

For years, HBO Documentary Films under executive producer Sheila Nevins established itself as a leading home for acclaimed nonfiction titles, including well known investigative and historical works. Netflix has similarly invested heavily in documentaries, earning multiple Academy Awards and releasing numerous contenders this year. However, the prospect of combining these two major players has raised concern across the industry, especially as filmmakers already face declining demand from streaming platforms.

The IDA joins other organizations, including the Writers Guild of America, in opposing the proposal. The WGA argued that the merger reflects the type of market consolidation antitrust laws are meant to prevent. The Directors Guild of America also voiced serious concern, noting the impact the deal could have on creators across the documentary field.

The IDA is preparing to host its annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles, where the potential merger and its implications for the documentary community are expected to dominate conversations. In its statement, the association urged federal regulators to reject the proposal, asserting that the acquisition would cause lasting harm to documentary filmmaking and calling for collective action to prevent it.
