Is "Heated Rivalry" Inspired by True Events? Exploring the Real-Life Hockey Players Behind the Steamy Show

Heated Rivalry, featuring Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, premiered on HBO Max on November 28. Adapted from Rachel Reid's acclaimed Game Changers series, the show centers on a secret romance between two NHL stars over eight years, blending intense competition with undeniable chemistry.

The series follows Shane Hollander (Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Storrie), who face off as top NHL players while exploring a hidden, passionate connection beyond the rink. Alongside the leads, Franois Arnaud, Dylan Walsh, Sophie Nlisse, Robbie G.K., Christina Chang, and Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova appear throughout the limited Canadian series, which spans multiple hockey seasons. The story charts the evolution of the duos relationship, highlighting themes of love, denial, and self-discovery.

In her acknowledgments, Reid credited the documentary 24/7, which followed the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals in 2011, as a key inspiration for the story. However, she emphasizes that the characters themselves are fictional.

Real-Life Inspirations Behind the Characters

While not a true story, Reid drew inspiration from real-life hockey rivalries. She specifically cited the famous competition between Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, as well as other professional athletes and classic sports rivalries. Reid explained that her characters are original creations, shaped by her interest in "enemies-to-lovers" and forbidden romance dynamics.

During a November 2025 interview, Reid noted that European players like Jaromr Jgr, Teemu Selnne, Ovechkin, and Ilya Kovalchuk influenced Ilya's character. Shanes persona, on the other hand, was inspired by stoic, leadership-oriented figures such as Wayne Gretzky, Crosby, and Paul Kariya.

The Real Rivalry of Crosby and Ovechkin

Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, first faced off in 2005, forming one of the most exciting rivalries in NHL history. Ovechkin reflected on the rivalry in 2024, noting that it fueled energy and motivation on the ice. Crosby agreed in 2025, calling the rivalry "great for hockey."

Over the years, their professional rivalry evolved into mutual respect. Ovechkin described their current dynamic as supportive, congratulating each other on milestones while maintaining a friendly relationship outside of the game. Despite the on-screen romance in Heated Rivalry, neither player has a real-life romantic connection. Ovechkin has been married to Anastasia Shubskaya since 2016, and Crosby is in a long-term relationship with Kathy Leutner.

Authors Perspective on the Adaptation

Reid shared her excitement about seeing her novel translated to the screen. She expressed delight at the adaptation, praising the production for exceeding fan expectations. At the Montreal premiere in November 2025, Reid celebrated the cast and crew, posting on Instagram about her admiration for everyone involved in bringing the series to life.
