Following the announcement that Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Jane Fonda, representing the Committee for the First Amendment, has criticized the deal, calling it a "constitutional crisis" with the potential to destroy Hollywood. In a statement released on Friday, Fonda expressed deep concern over the consolidation of the entertainment industry.
"The news that Warner Bros. Discovery has agreed to a purchase bid signals a dangerous escalation in the consolidation of media, which poses a threat not only to the entertainment industry but also to the democratic public it serves and to the very principles of the First Amendment," the statement read.
"This is not merely a disastrous business deal that could dismantle our creative sector. It represents a constitutional crisis, intensified by the current administration's blatant disregard for legal boundaries," Fonda continued.
Fondas statement urged the Department of Justice and state attorneys general to carefully review the deal, emphasizing the need for impartial antitrust investigations. "We demand that you refrain from allowing this power to be used for political influence that could affect content decisions or suppress free speech," it stated.
To Netflix and any companies involved in this acquisition, Fonda called for accountability: "We have witnessed industry leaders bowing to the administration's demands at the expense of our livelihoods, our creativity, and our constitutional rights. As guardians of an industry rooted in free expression, you have an obligation to protect these rights, not trade them for profit."
Fonda concluded the statement by pledging to continue organizing and monitoring the situation, ready to take action if necessary. "We are watching closely, and we are prepared to mobilize," she declared.
