Jimmy Kimmel and John Cena Discuss Wrestler's Oscar Bit That Pushed Dress Code Boundaries

Jimmy Kimmel opened up about the strict wardrobe guidelines at the Oscars while chatting with John Cena on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The discussion revisited Cenas memorable 2024 Oscars appearance, where he presented the award for Best Costume Design in almost nothing.

During the conversation, Kimmel, who has hosted the Oscars four times (2017, 2018, 2023, 2024), joked about the networks cautious approach to airing Cenas revealing bit. Cena laughed while recalling the tiny envelope he used to cover himself while wearing only Birkenstocks. "The card was so small," he said, highlighting the challenge of maintaining modesty on live TV.

Kimmel explained that the network's Standards and Practices team had extensive discussions before approving the segment. "This isnt something we can blur later if anything goes wrong," he noted, emphasizing the level of scrutiny applied. Cena added humorously about wanting to fully embrace the stunt, while Kimmel teased him about the description of his physique.

To ensure everything stayed appropriate, several precautions were taken. The card Cena held was made larger, and additional measures were implemented backstage to avoid any accidental exposure. "You cant show the exit at all," Cena joked, referring to the Oscars long-standing rules, which Kimmel confirmed had been in place for 90 years.

Kimmel also described the behind-the-scenes efforts to keep Cena covered, including repeated checks by the wardrobe team before he went on stage. After the broadcast, photos revealed Cena wearing a specially designed modesty pouch, ensuring his appearance was daring but compliant with the rules.

Despite the near-nude stunt, the segment was carefully controlled, blending humor with adherence to the Oscars dress code, leaving a memorable mark on the ceremony without breaking any official guidelines.
