At the Hollywood Reporters Women in Entertainment breakfast on Wednesday, Molly McNearney, executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, delivered a pointed commentary on President Donald Trump and the state of free expression in the United States. She reflected on her previous assumptions about the ease of exercising free speech, admitting she once took it for granted.
McNearney recalled a tense moment last September when her husbands program was temporarily removed from the air following remarks related to far-right podcaster Charlie Kirks alleged killer. She highlighted the serious consequences that followed the suspension.
I witnessed a show, colleagues, friends, and a man I love being put on indefinite suspension after our sensitive president demanded his removal and publicly involved the [Federal Communications Commission] to threaten the company we work for, McNearney said. These are precarious times for freedom.
She continued, stressing the importance of free speech as the backbone of the nation. Freedom of speech is the foundation on which this country stands. Great Americans like James Madison, Frederick Douglass, Alice Paul, and others fought tirelessly to secure and maintain it for us, she stated.
McNearney expanded on her message, noting the dangers of fear and distraction. We lose our freedoms when we let fear or distraction take over. Fear spreads quickly, but courage does too, she said.
Highlighting the role of late-night hosts, McNearney praised her husband and colleagues for their commitment to holding those in power accountable without hesitation. We must not shy away from speaking up to protect this nation and everyone in it, she emphasized.
She also revealed the challenges faced by her husband and their workplace, citing multiple threats from the president and media campaigns misrepresenting their words. I consider myself fortunate. We faced setbacks, but thanks to all of you, we stood back up, she told the audience.
Following public outcry, Kimmel returned to the air by September 23, after his show was pulled on September 17 in the wake of FCC threats.
