Kate Walsh Secures Return to 'Grey's Anatomy'

Dr. Addison Montgomery is set to return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Kate Walsh will reprise her role as the cherished and experienced doctor when Greys Anatomy comes back for its 22nd season in 2026. She is scheduled to appear in a single episode titled Strip That Down, which will air on January 29.

Walsh was last seen in a multi-episode storyline spanning seasons 18 and 19. During that time, the acclaimed OB/GYN and neonatal surgeon was part of a significant arc addressing post-Roe v. Wade issues. The storyline featured Addison collaborating with Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to assist a pregnant patient in Idaho and prompted changes in reproductive care policies at Grey Sloan.

The series frequently welcomes former cast members back to Grey Sloan. This season also marked the return of Dr. Jackson Avery, portrayed by Jesse Williams. Addison Montgomery is famously known as the ex-wife of Dr. Derek Shepherd, the late spouse of Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo.

Walsh originally departed Greys Anatomy in 2007 to star in the ABC spinoff Private Practice, though she has returned periodically since then. Showrunner Meg Marinis had hinted that season 22 would feature appearances from familiar faces. She shared that Meredith Grey would interact with some returning characters and suggested fans might even see scenes at Merediths old home.

Walshs comeback aligns with the anticipated return of Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Addisons former sister-in-law, played by Caterina Scorsone. Amelia went on hiatus after the shows milestone 450th episode on October 16 and is expected to reappear in 2026.

Recently, Walsh has appeared in Emily in Paris and Umbrella Academy, and she is slated to star in Steve Pinks upcoming comedy feature What the F*ck Is My Password?!
