One more CBS News personality bids farewell following controversy over reported successor

Maurice DuBois confirmed on Thursday that he will be leaving CBS Evening News on December 18, joining co-anchor John Dickerson, who had previously revealed his own upcoming exit. Their on-air partnership lasted less than a year, as the broadcast faced stiff competition from rival networks.

DuBois expressed appreciation in his farewell message on Instagram, stating he departs filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories. However, reports suggest his departure involved some tension. According to sources cited by the New York Post, network executives had already indicated that DuBois tenure was ending, prompting him to make an independent farewell announcement.

Following this, CBS News reportedly moved quickly to negotiate with Tony Dokoupil from CBS Mornings to potentially take over as the evening news anchor, a choice said to be favored by new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. Weiss, formerly a conservative columnist at The New York Times, was brought on with the intent to guide the network toward a different editorial direction.

CBS News President Tom Cibrowski strongly denied claims of internal conflict, stating that he had coordinated with DuBois for several weeks on the timing of his departure. It is my hope that we can work together again. We will have more details on the next chapter of CBS Evening News in the near future, Cibrowski said.

Neither Dickerson nor DuBois has publicly disclosed the reasons behind their departures. CBS insiders indicate that Dokoupil may be named the sole evening news anchor once contract discussions are finalized.

DuBois leaves CBS after a combined 21 years with the network, including time at its New York affiliate and on the national broadcast.
