Lizzo hit back at online trolls who made a fat joke about her, using the moment to remind fans that their bodies are their own, not anyone elses.
On December 4, the 37-year-old singer shared a poolside photo in a yellow snake-print bikini, taken from the neck down, along with a caption addressing the viral comment. While she did not repeat the joke, she acknowledged it as a dumb joke and highlighted the ongoing scrutiny people face about their bodies.
They were just laughing at me because Im fat Let me remind everyone to NEVER let anyone shame you for what you choose to do with your body, Lizzo wrote. Your body will never be good enough for them because its not FOR them. Its for you.
The singer, whose full name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, emphasized personal autonomy over body choices: If I get a BBL mind ur business, if I lose 100lbs mind ur business, if I gain every pound back and then some mind ur f------ business. She concluded her message with a playful clapback: Anyways my fat ass stays living with a paid off mortgage in yall bitches heads. .
Lizzo has been open about her fitness and body journey, addressing criticism about her weight in her music. In her track IDGAS from the mixtape My Face Still Hurts from Smiling, she rapped about the contradictory judgments she has faced when losing or gaining weight.
Rumors about Lizzo using Ozempic or similar medications circulated, but she has consistently denied long-term use, emphasizing her dedication to fitness, diet, and meal planning. In a now-deleted Instagram post, she detailed her routine, including training three times a week, cardio, sauna sessions, and working with a chef.
In addition to social media posts, Lizzo addressed the impact of weight-focused scrutiny on her career in a personal Substack essay. She explained that people often overlooked her talent as a musician, focusing instead on her body, and discussed the pressures she faced to counter stereotypical portrayals of Black women.
Were in an era where the bigger girls are getting smaller because theyre tired of being judged, she wrote, stressing the importance of expanding the body-positive movement beyond commercialized interpretations.
