Matthew Lillard expresses his feelings after Quentin Tarantino criticizes his acting: 'It's painful'

During a recent interview, Quentin Tarantino admitted, "I don't care for Matthew Lillard." Speaking at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Lillard shared his personal reaction to the filmmaker's comments, stating, "It's humbling, and it hurts." He added candidly, "It really sucks."

At the convention, Lillard addressed the criticism directly, recalling Tarantino's words from a podcast: "Quentin Tarantino this week said he didn't like me as an actor," which drew audible boos from the audience. Lillard initially shrugged it off, saying, "Eh, whatever. Who gives a s---." But he later reflected more deeply on the impact, admitting, "It hurts your feelings. It really sucks. And you wouldn't say that to Tom Cruise or a top-tier Hollywood actor."

Lillard also contrasted his popularity with fans versus his recognition in Hollywood, noting, "I'm very popular in this room. I'm not very popular in Hollywood. Two totally different microcosms. So, you know, it's humbling, and it hurts." An audience member then shouted support, "We love you!" to which he responded, "Thank you."

Tarantino had recently sparked headlines with criticisms of several actors on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. While discussing his top 10 films of the 21st century, he labeled Paul Dano as "the weakest male actor in SAG," expressed dislike for Owen Wilson, and included Lillard among the actors he doesnt care for, despite not naming any of Lillard's films in his top 10 list.

Lillard is currently starring in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which is in theaters now. He also appeared in Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck, featuring Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Karen Gillan.
