Reporter Attacked by Seagull While Filming News Story: Colleague Notices Blood

While covering a news story in Auckland, New Zealand, reporter Jessica Tyson was unexpectedly struck in the face by a seagull, resulting in a minor injury near her eye.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 2, as Tyson was filming a segment on fast fashion for Te Ao with Moana, a current affairs show highlighting news from a Mori perspective. Strong winds reportedly pushed the bird directly into her face just as she prepared for a second take.

Video footage shared by Tyson shows her reacting with shock and quickly checking her face. A colleague immediately noticed the cut and alerted her: Youre bleeding. Tyson touched the side of her face and realized the birds impact had left a scar above her left eye, narrowly avoiding her eyeball.

Despite the sudden mishap, Tyson maintained a lighthearted attitude. She described on social media how the bird seemed unharmed and soon returned to its group nearby. She quickly visited a nearby office in downtown Auckland to clean the wound before resuming filming.

Sharing the story on Instagram, Tyson highlighted her dedication to her work, noting that she recently sustained other minor injuries, including a cut finger and a bruised arm from a bike fall. She also mentioned performing a karakia, a Mori prayer, hoping to prevent future incidents.

Fans reacted with a mix of concern and amusement, with many commenting on social media about the unusual accident. Tyson reflected on the experience as intense but ultimately harmless, adding, All is well now. I can understand why people are so afraid of birds!
