During Garbage's ongoing tour in Australia, lead singer Shirley Manson encountered a fan with a large beach ball and didn't hold back her reaction. Footage from the band's Instagram Story captured Manson mocking the fan, saying, "Guy with your big beach ball, ooh, I'm so scared of you, so thrilled by you. What a jerk."
Manson later elaborated on her feelings about beach balls in a post on Threads. She wrote that she has no regrets about being irritated by them at concerts, explaining that she joined a band to embrace a darker, more intense musical experience, inspired by acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure, rather than the carefree vibe suggested by beach balls.
She continued, urging fans to keep enjoying music on streaming platforms and tossing around beach balls if they wish, but expressed frustration with audiences treating musicians like entertainers for free rather than respecting the art. Her stance aligns with Garbages signature mood, exemplified in their hit "Only Happy When It Rains."
Garbage released their latest album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, in May. They concluded their U.S. tour in November, which they indicated would be their final headline tour in North America.
