"Sister Wives": Janelle Brown Reflects on Her Mother Marrying Kody's Father Despite Opposition to Polygamy

Janelle Brown has opened up about an unexpected chapter in her familys past involving her former husband, Kody Brown, and their intertwined family ties.

In a recent episode of Sister Wives, Janelle met with friends Alice, Kristina, and Angela, who asked about the moment she first told her mother she planned to join a polygamous marriage. Janelle explained that her mother initially tried to intervene a decision that ultimately led her down an unforeseen path.

Janelle recalled that she was first introduced to the concept of polygamy in high school and later became committed to that lifestyle choice. After meeting Kody and feeling drawn to his family, she shared the news with her mother, Sheryl Usher. Her mother strongly objected at first, believing her daughter was headed into some crazy cult.

However, during her attempt to rescue Janelle from the situation, Sheryl developed her own connection with Kodys father, Winn Brown. According to Janelle, the two married just three months before she and Kody entered into their own spiritual union in 1993. Janelle admitted the situation felt a little weird at first, but she eventually grew comfortable with it, even though many relatives did not understand her choice to pursue polygamy.

The episode also highlighted Kodys recent efforts to reconcile with his former wives. Now in a monogamous relationship with Robyn Brown following the end of his marriages to Janelle, Christine, and Meri, Kody expressed a desire to personally apologize to each of them for past mistakes. He described the process as a necessary step for his conscience, though he was uncertain whether it would bring healing.

Kodys series of apologies has since been presented as an apology tour, beginning with his meeting with Janelle. Upcoming episodes will continue to follow his individual conversations with his former partners throughout December.
