Steve Cropper, the iconic guitarist of Booker T. & the M.G.'s and a key figure at Stax Records, has passed away at the age of 84. Renowned for co-writing timeless classics such as In the Midnight Hour, Knock on Wood, (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, and Green Onions, Cropper's influence on music extends far beyond his songwriting. His guitar work is featured on countless hits, leaving a lasting mark on soul, R&B, and rock music.

Cropper later became known to broader audiences as part of the Blues Brothers band, famously prompting the line "Play it, Steve!" in both the original Soul Man and their cover performances.

As for the cause of death, the Associated Press reports that it has not been immediately determined. Longtime friend Eddie Gore shared that he had visited Cropper on Tuesday at a rehabilitation center in Nashville, where the guitarist was recovering from a recent fall. Despite his health challenges, Cropper had been actively working on new music at the time.
