Sydney Sweeney Condemns Controversial American Eagle Jeans Ad in Emotional Statement: 'I Stand Against Hate' (Exclusive)

In a heartfelt discussion with PEOPLE, Sydney Sweeney addressed the controversy surrounding her American Eagle fall denim campaign, which bore the tagline, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans."

"Ive realized that staying silent on this matter has only fueled division rather than bridging it," Sweeney shared.

The actress also discussed her upcoming film The Housemaid and her personal intentions for the new year.

Response to the Campaign Backlash

Sweeneys American Eagle ad, released on July 23, generated widespread debate. Critics argued that the slogan's play on the words jeans and genes could be interpreted as racially insensitive, while others claimed it referenced the male gaze and drew inspiration from Brooke Shields' controversial 1980 denim campaign.

"The reaction genuinely caught me off guard," Sweeney explained. "I participated because I genuinely love the jeans and the brand. I do not endorse the interpretations that some people have attached to the campaign. Many assumptions about my intentions are simply untrue."

American Eagle responded publicly via Instagram on August 1, emphasizing that the campaign was always intended to celebrate the jeans and personal style: "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is about the jeans, her story, and how everyone wears their AE jeans confidently."

Sweeney stressed her commitment to kindness and unity. "I strive to bring people together and oppose divisiveness," she said. "Remaining silent has only widened gaps. My hope for the new year is to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us."

Early Reactions and Sales Success

Sweeney initially addressed the campaign in a GQ interview on November 4, expressing surprise at the response but affirming her love for jeans, saying, "I literally live in jeans and a T-shirt every day."

Despite the debate, American Eagle reported strong sales, noting record-breaking numbers in both mens and womens denim. The Sydney Jacket sold out in a single day, and the Sydney Jean, part of a charity initiative, sold out within a week.

Upcoming Projects and Personal Insights

Currently, Sweeney is promoting The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden's bestselling novel. She shared fond memories of working with co-star Amanda Seyfried, including receiving a crocheted bag made by Seyfried as a gift.

"We empowered each other by showing up fully, giving 100%, and spreading positive energy on set," Sweeney said. "Above all, we had fun."

She hopes audiences will leave the theater shocked and eager to watch the film with friends.

Life Beyond Work

On her days off, Sweeney enjoys adventurous activities like skydiving, water skiing, or rock climbing, as well as arts and crafts projects with her best friend. She also values fitness and time with her dog.

During the holidays, her family maintains a tradition of wearing matching onesies and stacking into a pyramid for a photo, a ritual that grows larger each year.

When asked about work-life balance, Sweeney admitted, "Im still figuring it out." She finds happiness in love, family, and friends, and cherishes the presence of her grandparents.

Looking ahead, she hopes to live more intentionally and express her true self, acknowledging the challenges of being misunderstood by others.

The Housemaid will be in theaters on December 19.
