The Reason Behind Top Navy Admiral's Sudden Resignation Revealed by Hegseth

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth asked Admiral Alvin Holsey, a four-star Navy officer, to resign after a prolonged period of disagreements. According to The Wall Street Journal, despite Hegseths statement in October that Holsey was retiring after just one year in office, it was in fact the defense secretary who requested the admiral's departure.

The conflict between Hegseth and Holsey began following the inauguration of Donald Trump in January. The tension escalated as the administration launched a campaign targeting boats in the waters near Central America. The goal was to destroy vessels allegedly involved in drug smuggling. Holsey raised concerns about the legality of these military actions, which led to further friction. Shortly after, Hegseth announced Holseys resignation.

The decision to remove such a highly respected Navy officer has sparked questions about whether other military leaders are fully supportive of these controversial boat bombings, and whether their concerns are being taken seriously. While other senior military figures have been removed during Trump's second term, Holsey is the only one to be dismissed amid ongoing military operations in Central America.

"For [Holsey] to leave at this crucial moment, when the Pentagon sees this as the focal point of operations in our hemisphere, is nothing short of astonishing," Todd Robinson, former assistant secretary for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, stated in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Holseys professional history aligns closely with the objectives of the current military operations. A former Navy helicopter pilot, the admiral had significant experience in intercepting drug shipments and had advocated for intensifying these efforts. During his confirmation hearing in September 2024, Holsey expressed his desire for a more aggressive stance to dismantle drug cartels. He mentioned that his initial deployment to the Southcom area, over 33 years ago, was focused on counterdrug missions.

At times, Hegseth and Holsey were in agreement during the past year, particularly when the admiral prepared military plans after Trumps proposal to reclaim the Panama Canal. However, there were also moments when Hegseth suspected Holsey of leaking information from the Department of Defense. By the time the boat bombings began in September, Hegseth had already lost faith in Holsey, according to reports.

Holseys resignation will take effect on December 12, and he has not publicly commented on his departure. Hegseth, meanwhile, is facing growing scrutiny over the legality of the strikes, even from Republicans in Congress. This controversy surrounding the admirals removal is likely to reflect negatively on both President Trump and the Secretary of Defense.
