Three Marvel Movies Nominated for Best Visual Effects of 2026

According to Variety, one of three Marvel productions is poised to claim the Best Visual Effects award at the 2026 Oscars. The contenders include Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Captain America: Brave New World.

While audience reactions to these films have varied, the visual effects have consistently been outstanding. In some cases, even the least critically acclaimed film could emerge victorious purely based on its visual achievements.

Captain America: Brave New World may not have performed well at the box office, yet its visual effects, particularly in depicting Red Hulk, were highly impressive. However, when compared to the technical craftsmanship of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it falls slightly short.

Thunderbolts* stands out as one of Marvels most intriguing recent releases, featuring a diverse ensemble of MCU characters joining forces against a major threat. The majority of the visual effects focus on the character Sentry, portrayed by Lewis Pullman, whose transformations and powers play a central role in the films iconic look. Even though the film didnt match typical MCU box office success, its effects remain on par with the franchises standards.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is widely regarded as superior in terms of visual artistry. The portrayal of the Fantastic Fours abilities and the cosmic entity Galactus is executed with remarkable precision, leading many to consider it the strongest MCU release in recent years. This makes it the frontrunner for the Best Visual Effects award, though the other Marvel films are expected to present strong competition.

Regardless of which film ultimately wins, Marvel Studios is set to take home the award. It is noteworthy that three films from the same studio have secured nominations, highlighting the exceptional dedication and talent of the visual effects teams, who manage to produce stunning results under demanding schedules.

While the final outcome remains uncertain, the likelihood is high that the Best Visual Effects Oscar will go to one of Marvel Studios entries.
