Between 2012 and 2016, Amanda Riley falsely claimed to have cancer, collecting over $100,000 in donations for non-existent treatment. Her husband, Cory Riley, remained by her side throughout the scandal but has stayed largely silent since her conviction.
Amanda deceived more than 300 donors by pretending to have lymphoma, using her blog, social media, and church connections to solicit money, gift cards, trips, and other support. Cory supported her publicly during this period, despite uncertainty about whether he knew the truth about her health.
While committing this fraud, Cory and Amanda were also involved in a custody dispute with his ex-wife over their daughter, Jessa, who later spoke out about Amanda's actions. Amandas crimes were later documented in the podcast and show Scamanda.
Cory Riley's Background
Little is known about Cory's early life. According to Scamanda producer Charlie Webster, Cory lost his father to suicide at a young age and was raised by his mother. Cory had a close childhood friendship with Jack York, who described him as cheerful and fun.
Before dating Amanda, Cory was married to Aletta, with whom he shared a daughter, Jessa. Aletta also had another daughter who suffered from acute lymphocytic leukemia. Amanda, then a 17-year-old cheerleader, initially visited their home to give dance lessons to Alettas daughter.
Cory and Amanda began dating after his divorce from Aletta, marrying in 2011. Friends noted that Cory was infatuated with Amanda, often proudly introducing her to others.
Corys Career and Life During the Scam
The Rileys lived in the Bay Area, where Cory worked as a fire sprinkler salesman, though he reportedly told some people he was a firefighter and professor. Investigations suggested he falsified pay stubs for about seven years to reduce child support obligations.
Amanda started her blog Lymphoma Can Suck It in 2012, claiming a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis. Through social media and her church network, she collected donations and gifts, staged hospital visits, and even shaved her head to make her deception believable. Cory accompanied her to appointments, often publicly supporting her claims.
The Investigation and Conviction
Investigative journalist Nancy Moscatiello began looking into Amanda in 2015, contacting the San Jose Police and later the IRS. In 2020, Amanda was officially charged with wire fraud and pleaded guilty, receiving five years in prison, three years of probation, and ordered restitution to her victims.
Cory was never criminally charged, though many, including Moscatiello, suspect he was aware of Amandas deceit. Due to spousal privilege, proving his involvement would have been difficult. Experts suggest he may still face accountability through civil court.
Family Perspectives
Some close to the case, including Alettas sister and the family babysitter, believe Cory knew about Amandas fraud. Corys daughter, Jessa, also implied that he was aware, noting his constant presence at hospital visits and support of Amandas story.
Cory Riley Today
Following Amanda's conviction, Cory has maintained a private life. Reports indicate he is raising their two sons away from public attention. As of 2023, Cory and the children were living in Austin, Texas, while Amanda served the remainder of her sentence in a Southern California re-entry facility. Cory has not publicly commented on the case.
