Drinking This Juice Daily Could Extend Your Lifespan, Scientists Suggest

A recent small-scale study explores the possible benefits of consuming orange juice, suggesting it may support longevity and cardiovascular wellness. However, this doesnt mean everyone should start drinking it in large amounts immediately.

Orange juice is widely recognized for its high vitamin C content, making it a popular choice during cold and flu season. The latest research, though, points to additional advantages from incorporating a daily glass into your diet.

Study Findings

The study revealed that consuming 100% orange juice without added sugar daily could enhance markers of health and lifespan. Researchers discovered that drinking 500 millilitres (approximately 17 ounces) of pure orange juice for 60 days influenced gene activity, effectively turning on or turning off specific biological functions, according to Lauren Manaker, M.S., R.D.N., L.D., a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in womens health.

Changes in gene expression observed in participants were linked to improved regulation of blood pressure, inflammation, and metabolism, all critical components of cardiovascular function and overall longevity.

About the Study

The trial included 20 healthy adults aged 21 to 36. Participants citrus intake was restricted three days prior to the study. Researchers collected blood samples and body measurements at the beginning and end of the 60-day period, analyzing over 1,700 genes using advanced bioinformatics tools.

Combined with findings from a 2021 study, the results suggest that daily consumption of 100% orange juice may positively affect body composition and cardiovascular health. However, the impact varied depending on body weight: overweight participants experienced greater benefits in fat metabolism, while leaner individuals showed stronger anti-inflammatory responses, explains Manaker. Mary Greene, M.D., a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology in NYC, notes that these differences highlight the potential for personalized dietary recommendations.

Why Orange Juice May Support Health

100% orange juice is rich in flavonoids, especially hesperidin, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation, contributing to reduced cell damage. These compounds may also influence gene expression, enhancing health outcomes. Vitamin C further supports these antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Previous studies have similarly linked orange juice to better health. According to Manaker, systematic reviews indicate that drinking around 500 mL daily can improve blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation markers.

Consumption Considerations

Its important to consume only 100% fruit juice without added sugar. Natural sugars in orange juicearound 4050 grams per 500 mLmay pose a concern for individuals with diabetes or other health conditions. Dr. Greene advises consulting a doctor before making daily orange juice a habit.

For generally healthy individuals, enjoying a glass with breakfast as part of a balanced diet is considered safe. Manaker points out that most Americans fail to meet recommended fruit and vegetable intake, and an 8-ounce serving of 100% orange juice counts as one portion of fruit, helping fill nutritional gaps.
