Most drivers in the United States have experienced the discomfort of being behind a lifted truck or encountering one at a stoplight. The towering wheels can feel intimidating or simply annoying. While owners of modified trucks often take pride in their vehicles, they present several challenges for other motorists. Lifted trucks can obstruct sightlines, produce unexpectedly loud noise, and even interfere with drivers' ability to judge distance and space on the road.
These massive vehicles frequently spark debates on Reddit, particularly in forums like r/f***cars. Recently, a Reddit user shared a photo of a lifted truck spotted in an unusual location Times Square in Manhattan. For scale, a 5-foot-3 person stood nearby, and the top of their head barely reached the truck's hood. The poster questioned why such trucks are permitted in U.S. cities.
Beyond being a roadside nuisance, lifted trucks also raise environmental concerns. Large pickup trucks are already known for high fuel consumption, and lifting them while carrying extra weight further decreases efficiency. Although lifted trucks are not inherently illegal, modifications such as "deleting" emissions controls are sometimes discussed in online forums, with warnings about the legal risks involved.
Reddit users responded with personal anecdotes and frustrations. One remarked that owners of these trucks often complain about traffic and fuel costs, while another joked about commuting police officers. A third commenter noted safety concerns, citing instances of pedestrians being struck because drivers of tall trucks cannot see them. Some expressed disbelief that such large vehicles are allowed in heavily trafficked tourist areas.
There is a small positive development: a ten-block section of Manhattan's Fifth Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic for several hours on December 14 to allow pedestrians to enjoy the area near Rockefeller Center.
