Appeals court grants permission for National Guard to remain in D.C. temporarily

On Thursday, a federal appeals court issued a temporary pause on a lower court decision that would have required the National Guard to leave Washington, D.C. The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals suspended Judge Jia Cobb's order mandating the troops' removal, stating it needs additional time to determine whether the suspension should continue long-term.

President Donald Trump has consistently praised the National Guard for helping reduce crime in the city.

Fatal Shooting Raises Concerns

The Guard's presence has drawn scrutiny following a deadly shooting shortly before Thanksgiving. In that incident, a gunman killed West Virginia Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and critically injured Air Force Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb opposes keeping the troops in the capital, arguing that their continued deployment creates significant public safety risks and unlawfully interferes with local law enforcement.

On Thursday, President Trump met with Sgt. Wolfes family in the Oval Office. He shared a photo on Truth Social, praising the family as fantastic American patriots and noting that Wolfe is recovering from his injuries.

The suspect in the attack faces multiple charges in the district, and federal charges are anticipated. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has indicated she will recommend pursuing the death penalty.
