Pentagon confirms all National Guard soldiers deployed in Washington DC are now armed

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that every National Guard member stationed in Washington DC is now equipped with live firearms and has begun conducting coordinated patrols with the citys police department. Kingsley Wilson, the Department of Defense press secretary, stated at a briefing, I can confirm that everyone in DC is now armed, and many of our National Guard personnel are patrolling jointly with local police.

This decision follows a recent shooting near the White House that targeted two National Guard members, resulting in the death of one soldier. In response, the Trump administration deployed additional troops to the capital. Initial reports of the joint patrols with the Metropolitan Police were first obtained by the Washington Post last week.

Wilson described the expanded military role as a necessary measure to counter what he called an urgent threat to American cities. Our mission is essential, he said. We are working to protect cities across the nation and will continue our efforts in DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and beyond.

The policy change to arm all 2,375 troops currently deployed, plus 500 more recently ordered, represents a major shift in domestic military engagement rules. While all National Guard members receive basic combat training, including proficiency with rifles and sidearms, the level of ongoing weapons and tactical training varies based on their military specialty. Many Guard units serve support roles, which can make the use of live weapons in a domestic setting potentially risky.

The deployment comes amid legal challenges, as a recent order declaring the National Guard presence in Washington DC unlawful is on hold pending the administrations appeal. The Joint Task Force overseeing the deployment confirmed that all service members are trained and certified to use their assigned weapons in line with Department of War standards. A spokesperson said, National Guard members supporting this mission have been armed with their assigned duty weapons since August 2025, operating under civil authority requests and mission requirements.

While safety remains a priority, the rapid arming of all reservists for street-level operations raises concerns about their readiness for law enforcement duties. The shooting near Farragut West metro station, close to the White House, resulted in the death of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, while 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe remains critically injured. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national and former member of a CIA-supported unit in Afghanistan, was also shot and is facing first-degree murder charges. The incident has prompted the administration to review immigration policies for Afghan nationals and other asylum cases.

The National Guard has been deployed in Washington since August under a crime emergency declared by the administration. Wilson concluded, The National Guard is proud to support our law enforcement partners in maintaining safety and order.
