The House Homeland Security Committee is holding a Wednesday morning hearing addressing the nationwide increase in attacks targeting law enforcement. The session follows the recent shooting of two National Guard members deployed to Washington during federal anti crime operations. One of the service members, U S Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, died from her wounds, while the second remains in serious condition but is reportedly improving.
The hearing also comes in the wake of a fatal shooting months earlier at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the Dallas area, part of a broader pattern of violent incidents. According to an FBI report, assaults on officers climbed to their highest level in a decade in 2023, with more than 79000 reported attacks.
The hearing is set to begin at 10 a m EST.
