Trump: National Guard troops will be sent to New Orleans shortly.

Dec. 3 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump announced that the National Guard will soon be sent to New Orleans, marking the next city to experience a heightened military presence in the United States. This follows previous deployments to cities governed by Democrats, including Los Angeles, Memphis, and Washington, D.C., with attempts to send troops to Chicago and Portland being halted by court decisions.

The administration describes the deployment as a measure to enhance public safety, protect federal personnel and facilities, and support local authorities during demonstrations linked to Trumps immigration policies. Critics, particularly Democrats, argue that the initiative represents an unconstitutional militarization of urban areas, potentially intimidating residents and suppressing protests and free expression.

Trump shared the news during the years final Cabinet meeting, several months after Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican ally, requested National Guard assistance in New Orleans. Were heading to New Orleans shortly. The governor reached out for support, and well be there in a few weeks, Trump stated, praising Landry as an outstanding leader.

Governor Landry formally requested the deployment in a letter dated September 29, proposing up to 1,000 Louisiana National Guard members be stationed through the end of the next fiscal year. The troops would assist both state and federal law enforcement in addressing ongoing crime concerns across Louisiana.

Following the announcement, Landry expressed gratitude on X: Thank you President @realDonaldTrump and @Sec_Noem for prioritizing AMERICANS. We welcome the Swamp Sweep in Louisiana.
