President Donald Trump has recently branded himself as the AFFORDABILITY PRESIDENT, suggesting that this focus could boost Republican performance in next years midterm elections. Observers have noted similarities to New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist whose campaign heavily emphasized tackling the affordability crisis in the city.
On Monday, TPM asked Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), another Democratic Socialist known for addressing income inequality in his presidential runs, for their reactions to Trumps self-proclaimed title. Sanders bluntly criticized Trump, calling him a pathological liar and noting that his claims on affordability are misleading.
The conversation took place as both Mamdani and Sanders joined striking Starbucks workers in Brooklyn. The strike, now in its third week, coincides with a $38.9 million settlement Starbucks reached for violating local labor laws by failing to provide stable schedules for employees.
Trumps announcement on Truth Social read, I AM THE AFFORDABILITY PRESIDENT, citing dramatic drops in drug prices that experts say are mathematically inaccurate. Critics also noted that many of the policies contributing to lower costs originated under President Joe Biden. Sanders highlighted the role of GOP legislation and tariffs in raising healthcare and consumer prices.
Mamdani offered a measured response, emphasizing results over labels. He stressed that workers face real hardships, such as unpredictable schedules and wages that make city living unaffordable. Mamdani pledged to continue attending picket lines and reiterated his commitment to improving affordability in New York City.
Venezuela and Trumps Ongoing Claims
Trumps past election-related conspiracy theories regarding Venezuela have resurfaced. Mara Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, suggested these claims influenced Trumps foreign policy focus. Investigations into these theories are reportedly underway, coordinated by the U.S. Attorneys Office in Puerto Rico. Trump has publicly supported these claims on Truth Social.
Indiana Redistricting Controversy
Indiana GOP State Senator Michael Bohacek announced he will oppose redistricting following Trumps use of a derogatory term for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Bohacek cited personal reasons and criticized the presidents language and behavior, signaling potential challenges to Trumps efforts to influence redistricting in Republican-led states. The Indiana Senate will vote on December 8, and approval requires agreement from both legislative chambers and the governor.
