A grand jury in Texas has formally charged Uvalde County Judge William Ross Mitchell with official oppression. The accusation stems from an incident where Mitchell ordered the temporary detention of a UPS delivery driver who frustrated him during a courthouse delivery.
The conflict arose when the driver left packages on the first floor, instead of transporting them to the third floor, citing a non-functioning elevator. In response, Mitchell directed a deputy to take the driver into custody, resulting in him being handcuffed briefly before being released.
Following the incident, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct has placed Mitchell on suspension without pay while the legal process unfolds.
