Hakeem Jeffries Applauds Trump's Pardon of 'Beloved' Democrat: 'The Perfect Decision'

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) expressed support for President Donald Trumps decision to pardon Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX), calling it the right decision. Jeffries spoke with CNNs The Situation Room shortly after the pardon was announced.

Cuellar had faced legal trouble after being indicted in March 2024 on allegations of accepting significant sums in foreign bribes. His wife was also charged at the same time. Jeffries emphasized Cuellars strong reputation and connection to his community, particularly in Laredo, Texas.

Congressman Cuellar is highly respected in the House and cherished in his district. Ive spent time with him in Laredo, and I can say he is deeply valued, Jeffries stated. He also described the charges against Cuellar as very thin and suggested they might have been dismissed eventually, either in trial or by higher courts.

While Jeffries admitted he was uncertain about the reasoning behind Trumps pardon, he fully supported the result. I dont know the presidents exact motivation, but I believe this was the correct outcome, he said.

When asked about the possibility of Cuellar switching parties, Jeffries said he is unaware of any plans for reelection but expects Cuellar to remain a committed member of the Democratic Party. He is an essential part of the House Democratic Caucus, and I anticipate that will continue, he added.
