Lawmakers request audio and video footage of boat attack amid growing concerns on Capitol Hill about follow-up strike

Sen. Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, stated Monday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed a second U.S. strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean in September. The attack has prompted bipartisan scrutiny in Congress.

Wicker indicated that the committee expects full access to audio and video evidence of the strikes as part of its investigation, amid allegations that the U.S. executed a double-tap strike after the initial attack failed to fully neutralize the target. I dont have that information, but we will get it, and we will have all audio and video available. Then I can have a more informed discussion, Wicker said regarding whether the second strike killed survivors, an act that could potentially breach the laws of war.

The senator pledged rigorous oversight, noting conversations with Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and upcoming discussions with Adm. Frank M. Mitch Bradley, who the White House said ordered the strike. House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers also spoke with Hegseth about the second strike over the weekend, a source told CNN.

Wicker, Rogers, and other senior Republicans are pressing the White House for detailed information about the recent military operations in the Caribbean, citing concerns that a second strike was ordered after the first did not eliminate all individuals on board the alleged Venezuelan drug vessel. The effort reflects rising GOP scrutiny of the White Houses military actions, in which Congress has had minimal involvement.

The legality of U.S. military strikes has become a focus, with more than 80 casualties reported. Septembers follow-up strike, in particular, has drawn attention from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. GOP Sen. Thom Tillis emphasized that if reports of Hegseth ordering a second strike while survivors remained on the burning ship are verified, it could constitute an ethical or legal violation. If true, those responsible need to be held accountable, Tillis said.

Rep. Don Bacon called the reports concerning if accurate, questioning Hegseths judgment. Sen. Lindsey Graham said he is gathering facts but highlighted the principle that survivors and noncombatants should not be targeted. Sen. Jim Justice labeled a potential second strike as excessive, even while acknowledging limited information.

Senate intelligence leaders are also seeking briefings. Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the panel, expects discussions with Adm. Bradley and urged the administration to release unedited strike footage to clarify whether the individuals were combatants. Warner criticized the administration for lack of transparency, stating, This is not the way the system is supposed to work.

Democrats have widely condemned the second strike, with some labeling it a potential war crime. Sen. Tim Kaine noted bipartisan efforts to limit presidential military authority, while Sen. Peter Welch stressed the need to hear directly from Hegseth regarding his orders.

Some Republicans defended the actions. Sen. Markwayne Mullin said the strike did not breach international law and emphasized uncertainty about the circumstances. Sen. John Cornyn also supported the presidents constitutional authority to protect the nation.

The situation continues to spark debate across party lines, highlighting concerns about the oversight of U.S. military operations in the Caribbean.
