Republicans begin to turn against Pete Hegseth amidst allegations

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is under intense scrutiny following claims about his involvement in recent military strikes that targeted civilian vessels in international waters. During the latest White House Cabinet meeting, Hegseth faced renewed inquiries regarding a purported kill everyone directive and accusations that U.S. forces killed two survivors from a September boat strike.

Hegseth defended his actions by citing the fog of war, claiming he had not noticed the survivors and did not remain to oversee subsequent strikes. His explanations have done little to ease the growing criticism. Democratic leaders have been especially vocal. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the Pentagons leadership as a national embarrassment, noting that Hegseths handling of the department highlights the risks of appointing an inexperienced media personality to such a high-stakes position.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona highlighted Hegseths previous comments about military personnel rejecting unlawful orders, calling attention to the apparent contradiction in Hegseths statements.

Compounding the issue, Hegseth is also losing support among Republicans. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky questioned whether Hegseth had lied or was simply unaware of the events, pointing out inconsistencies in the Secretarys statements. Senators Jim Justice, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, and Joni Ernst have expressed concern over the allegations, emphasizing that if the claims are proven true, they could represent both ethical and legal violations.

Even Senate Majority Leader John Thune admitted he has not yet formed an opinion on Hegseths performance. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska said Hegseth may not be fit to lead the department. While some GOP figures, such as Senator John Kennedy, have downplayed the accusations, the controversy continues to put pressure on the Secretary despite ongoing support from Donald Trump.

The situation highlights the precarious position of cabinet members who face criticism from both opposition and their own party, raising questions about Hegseths future in the Pentagon.
