CNN journalist and senior White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins directly challenged President Donald Trump regarding a newly created Peace Prize, even as his administration continues to authorize strikes on alleged drug operations abroad.
The event took place at The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts on Friday during the FIFA World Cup Draw, which determines the tournament groupings. During the ceremony, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the inaugural 2025 FIFA Peace Prize.
On Thursday night, Collins aired a segment on CNNs The Source featuring her encounter with Trump on the red carpet, minutes before he received the award:
Trump: Now theyre saying if I end the war between Russia and Ukraine, I might get a Nobel Prize. What about the other conflicts? India, Pakistan think of all the wars Ive resolved. I could get a Nobel for each, but Im not being greedy. Someone who won the Nobel Prize even said I deserve it, which was nice. But I care about something bigger I care about saving lives and stopping deaths.
Collins pressed further about ongoing military actions, including a recent strike in the Caribbean that killed survivors. She noted that these operations have resulted in 87 deaths, which Trump has described as war a war Congress has neither declared nor authorized. On the red carpet, she confronted the President about the apparent contradiction between receiving a Peace Prize and continuing military strikes.
Collins: Youre about to receive the FIFA Peace Prize. How do you respond to those who say it conflicts with your commitment to strike Venezuela?
Trump: The Peace Prize is something Ive heard about, but Im here representing the country. I have settled eight wars, and a ninth is underway something unprecedented. I focus on saving lives, not prizes. Millions of lives have been saved, and thats my priority. I also want to lead a strong nation. A year ago, the U.S. was struggling; now its thriving.
The event also highlighted that the United States is co-hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada, whose leaders were present at the Kennedy Center. This led to reminders of Trumps previous threats involving these nations.
Trump: Launching strikes in Mexico over drugs? Id consider it. There are significant issues there. Honestly, Canada could just join the U.S. as the 51st state.
