Republicans stand by Johnson as speaker despite increasing criticism and demands for new leadership

A faction of House Republicans is rallying around Speaker Mike Johnson, offering strong support even as other influential members voice dissatisfaction with his leadership and question the longevity of his role. Over recent days, several conservative lawmakers have publicly praised Johnson on social media and in interviews.

Hes genuine, compassionate, and true to his character, Rep. Pat Fallon remarked to the Wall Street Journal.

Illinois Rep. Mary Miller added, Speaker Johnson has guided our House majority with courage, clarity, and exceptional patience.

These endorsements appear aimed at offsetting the negative attention Johnson has received amid public disputes with notable figures such as outgoing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Trump supporter Rep. Elise Stefanik, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.

During a government shutdown, Greene criticized Johnson for not presenting an affordable healthcare solution and later for refusing to bring a vote compelling the Justice Department to release the Epstein files to the House floor. Greene, who has accused GOP leadership of sidelining Republican women, announced her resignation effective January, reportedly surprising Johnson.

Meanwhile, Texas Rep. Beth Van Duyne praised Johnson, telling The Hill that he has demonstrated strong leadership, an ability to listen, and the skill to pass major legislation.

Stefanik expressed anger over Johnson excluding a provision she sought in a bill, calling him a liar on social media and claiming that a majority of Republicans would support new leadership if a vote were held, labeling Johnson a political novice.

Conversely, North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson described Johnson as a fantastic leader who has exceeded expectations on various requests.

Rep. Luna, pursuing a discharge petition to vote on legislation banning Congress members from trading stocks, expressed frustration with Johnson. South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace has also privately conveyed her concerns about his leadership.

California Rep. Kevin Kiley has criticized Johnsons handling of issues such as the government shutdown and redistricting, citing widespread dissatisfaction with his effectiveness.

Following a challenging week, Johnson told reporters that he encourages members to voice complaints privately rather than on social media. Theyre going to get upset about thingsthats part of the process, he said. It doesnt bother me. But when there is a conflict or concern, I always ask all members to come to me directly.
