Any serious discussion about Donald Trumps character has largely been settled years ago. Yet the president continues to take actions that further damage his reputation for decency and integrity. For instance, on Thanksgiving, when asked by a reporter if he would attend U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstroms funeral in West Virginia, Trump first expressed uncertainty, then quickly shifted to highlighting the size of his electoral victory in the state a comment strikingly out of place given the tragic circumstances of Beckstroms death.

At the same gathering, Trump, known for his frequent disparagement of female journalists, labeled a reporter a stupid person for posing a question he disliked. Later that evening, as the holiday drew to a close, he posted on his social media platform a statement insulting Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, calling him seriously retarded.

The reaction was immediate. NBC News reported that Indiana State Senator Michael Bohacek declared he would not support efforts to redraw congressional district lines favoring Republicans following Trumps use of the slur. Bohacek, who has a daughter with Down syndrome, emphasized the impact of the presidents words, stating on Facebook, This is not the first time our president has used these insulting and derogatory references, and his choices of words have consequences. I will be voting NO on redistricting, perhaps he can use the next 10 months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority.

The statement carried significant weight in Washington. As Indianas legislature moved forward with its redistricting plans, there were already signs that the proposed map might not secure enough support. By employing offensive language, Trump arguably undermined his own political objectives.

On Sunday night, when a reporter asked whether he stood by calling Walz retarded, Trump responded, Yeah. I think theres something wrong with him. Absolutely. Sure.

The original report titled Trump faces fallout after targeting Tim Walz with offensive slur was published on MS NOW.
