Dec. 3 President Donald Trump is set to unveil a proposal to relax fuel efficiency regulations introduced under the Biden administration, according to multiple unnamed sources. The announcement is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from the Oval Office, where executives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis are expected to attend.
Ford CEO Jim Farley expressed support, stating, "As the nation's leading automaker, we value President Trump's approach in adjusting fuel efficiency rules to better reflect market realities. We can reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency while keeping vehicles affordable and giving customers more options."
While specific details of Trump's plan remain unclear, it is anticipated to roll back the stricter fuel standards set by former President Joe Biden. Trump has criticized these regulations and incentives for electric vehicles, labeling them as an "EV mandate."
Historically, fuel standards were increased during Barack Obama's administration, then relaxed during Trump's first term. Biden subsequently raised standards by 8% for 2024 and 2025 models and by 10% for 2026 vehicles. Trump has argued that meeting these tighter requirements would be impossible without a major shift toward electric cars.
Early in his second term, Trump reduced subsidies and incentives for electric vehicle purchases. Additionally, the Republican-led Congress has removed federal tax credits for EV buyers.
Trump hinted at his upcoming announcement during his last Cabinet meeting of the year, saying, "We're reviving the automobile industry. I believe we will reach unprecedented levels in the auto sector."
