The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to release veteran cornerback Darius Slay, ending their partnership after less than a full season. Multiple sources confirm that the move was a mutual decision between the player and the team.
According to Slays agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey, the 34-year-old cornerback is eager to continue his career and is open to signing with other teams.
In a corresponding roster adjustment, the Steelers are promoting Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster, creating space by waiving Slay. If Slay passes through waivers, he will be free to join another team. Additionally, Pittsburgh is reportedly claiming wide receiver Adam Thielen, who was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings.
Slay has not participated in games since November 9 due to a concussion, missing Week 11s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Though he was cleared from the injury report in Week 12, he did not play in the subsequent loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Slay joined the Steelers this season on a one-year contract after four years with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned a Super Bowl title. He began his NFL career with four seasons in Detroit. Slay is a six-time Pro Bowler, with three selections each during his tenures in Philadelphia and Detroit.
Pittsburgh, now holding a 6-6 record, has struggled defensively in recent games. Following the loss to the Bills, fans voiced their frustration with chants calling for head coach Mike Tomlins dismissal. Tomlin, the NFLs longest-tenured head coach since 2007, acknowledged the criticism but did not oppose it, stating, When you're not winning, it's not entertaining. And so I respect it, I share their frustrations.
Despite recent setbacks, Tomlin has guided the Steelers to 18 consecutive non-losing seasons. Pittsburgh now needs to win at least three of its remaining five games to maintain that streak.
