Texas A&M expected to host early season opponent in first round of the CFP

Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) concluded their regular season with a 27-17 loss to in-state rival Texas (9-3, 6-2 SEC) on Friday night. The defeat marked the Aggies' first loss of the season and left their College Football Playoff placement uncertain, with projections suggesting a drop of two or three spots in the rankings.

The upcoming SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia could heavily influence Texas A&M's final standing, which will be revealed Sunday night. Many analysts argue that a single loss on the road against a ranked opponent after an 11-0 start should not push the Aggies lower than No. 5 heading into Tuesday nights rankings release.

However, opinions from prominent college football analysts indicate that the Selection Committee could adjust the seeding more drastically, potentially placing Texas A&M as low as the 7-seed. CBS Sports' Bud Elliott projected on Monday night that the Aggies would hold the 7-seed and face the 10-seed, Notre Dame, in the first round of the CFP.

Earlier this season, Texas A&M narrowly defeated Notre Dame 41-40 in South Bend. Since then, Notre Dame has remained undefeated. A matchup in the CFP would bring the Fighting Irish back to Kyle Field for the second time since their 2024 season-opener against the Aggies. While this remains a projection, a rematch seems plausible given the season's notable clash, though it is unlikely the Aggies would fall below the No. 6 spot in the final rankings.

Fans and analysts alike are debating Bud Elliotts projection as the CFP approaches Week 15. For continued updates on Texas A&M news and analysis, follow @AggiesWire on X and like their Facebook page. Cameron Ohnysty can be followed on X at @CameronOhnysty.
