Versace designer exits unexpectedly despite successful debut

The question of whether fashion still allows room for true originality has resurfaced in Milan with surprising news: Dario Vitale, the recently appointed creative director of Versace, is leaving the brand despite receiving praise for his debut collection this September.

Versace and Dario Vitale have mutually agreed to part ways effective December 12th, 2025, the brand announced. We sincerely thank Dario for his remarkable contributions to the brands creative direction during this period and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

This announcement comes shortly after the Prada Group finalized a $1.44 billion acquisition of Versace, prompting speculation about Vitales future at the house. The departure statement was issued by new executive chairman Lorenzo Bertelli, who also continues as Pradas chief marketing officer and head of corporate social responsibility.

Vitale, a seasoned Italian designer in his forties with 15 years at Miu Miu, surprised many with a debut collection that defied expectations. His designs, which included daring cocktail dresses tucked into underwear and revealing tank tops, stood out amid a fashion landscape dominated by safe, minimalistic luxury. Critics noted that his show injected a bold, kitschy energy into Versace, reminiscent of the late Gianni Versaces unapologetic style.

The collection gained attention and positive reviews without relying on the usual marketing machinery, making it a rare triumph in authentic creative expression. It was also the first Versace collection not designed by Gianni or Donatella Versace in the brands 47-year history.

Industry insiders questioned whether a designer could succeed without the support of large-scale marketing or by challenging conventional good taste norms. Prada CEO Andrea Guerra emphasized the importance of stability during the transition, stating, Especially at the beginning, stability is a very important word. We are going to care about everyone working in Versace and everything happening at Versace.

While departures after a single collection are unusual, Bertellis description of the decision as mutual suggests a mismatch in vision rather than public failure. A new creative director for Versace will be announced in the near future, with hopes high for someone capable of continuing Vitales shockingly original approach.
