National Guard shooting suspect denies guilt; all Guard members in DC authorized to carry weapons

A man accused of opening fire on two National Guard service members in Washington, D.C. has entered a not guilty plea to murder and assault charges. The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, appeared for his initial court hearing remotely from a hospital bed, with his lawyer submitting the plea on his behalf as he stated he was in pain and unable to open his eyes.

Authorities report that Lakanwal faces charges including first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the deadly attack that claimed the life of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and critically wounded Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24. A police filing states that another Guardsman witnessed the shooting, reporting that Lakanwal shouted while firing, then pursued another service member before being apprehended as he attempted to reload.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond ruled that Lakanwal will remain in custody without bail, with the next court appearance scheduled for January 14.

Meanwhile, Staff Sgt. Wolfe remains in serious condition but is showing small signs of improvement, according to Governor Patrick Morrisey, who noted that the wounded airman responded to medical staff with a thumbs-up and slight movement in his feet.

Pentagon Authorizes National Guard to Carry Weapons During Patrols

Following the incident, the Pentagon confirmed that all National Guard personnel currently patrolling the nations capital are now permitted to carry weapons. Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson said the decision follows the deadly attack and that Guard members are conducting joint patrols alongside local police.

Federal officials also stated that Lakanwal allegedly traveled from Washington state to the capital on the same day the shooting occurred.
