Texas Boy, 13, Dies in ATV Crash with 3 Friends: Family in Unbearable Grief

Robert Treb McKinnon, a 13-year-old from Decatur, Texas, tragically passed away following an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident on a county road on November 29. He was riding with three friends when the vehicle flipped, resulting in serious injuries for those involved.

McKinnons school, McCarroll Middle School, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the student, highlighting the grief shared by the entire community. Our hearts are with the McKinnon family during this incredibly difficult time, the Decatur Independent School District said in a statement, urging the community to offer love and support.

According to Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 300 block of County Road 3250 over Thanksgiving weekend. Emergency responders rushed McKinnon and two other minors to Medical City Decatur. The 13-year-old succumbed to his injuries there. One of the injured teens was later airlifted to Cook Childrens Hospital in Fort Worth, while the third sustained serious injuries but remained in Decatur for treatment. The fourth teen suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital transport.

In the wake of this tragedy, community members have rallied to support the McKinnon family, with an online fundraiser exceeding $13,000 as of December 4, the day before his funeral.

McKinnons obituary remembers him as a talented athlete and a loyal friend who brought joy to those around him. He dreamed of playing football for Ohio State, loved the Dallas Cowboys, and cherished every moment on the field with friends and teammates. Teachers described him as a hardworking and respectful student who consistently gave his best effort.
