Rescue teams continue to face challenges in reaching remote areas a week after severe floods and landslides swept across South and Southeast Asia, claiming more than 1,400 lives and leaving nearly 1,000 people unaccounted for. Authorities reported at least 780 fatalities in Indonesia, 465 in Sri Lanka, 185 in Thailand, and three in Malaysia as of Wednesday, while heavy rain and ongoing storm-induced flooding persist in the region.
Many villages remain buried under mud and debris, with large regions still lacking electricity and telecommunications. Indonesia has been the hardest hit, with damaged roads and collapsed bridges cutting off access to numerous districts in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Rescue efforts are being carried out using helicopters, boats, and improvised rafts, though progress is slowed by damaged transport routes and the risk of new landslides.
Environmental concerns are also emerging. In Padang, both residents and emergency workers discovered stacks of cut timber amid the flood debris, raising fears that illegal logging may have contributed to the severity of the disaster by destabilizing hillsides. "The shape of these logs shows they were deliberately cut, not torn out naturally by the flood," said Neviana, a member of a clean-up crew. Officials have yet to confirm the source, but cabinet secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that an investigation is underway. "Environmental degradation has compounded the effects of extreme weather," he said.
Sri Lanka is grappling with the disaster under particularly difficult conditions, still recovering from an economic crisis with shortages of fuel, foreign currency, and essential relief supplies. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya recently appealed to foreign diplomats for immediate aid and reconstruction support. India, Pakistan, and the UAE were among the first to respond, with India sending an additional naval vessel carrying medical teams and supplies to assist ongoing operations along the east coast. Many regions, particularly in the central highlands, remain inaccessible due to landslides that destroyed entire communities, and hundreds of people are still missing.
In Thailand, recovery efforts are progressing steadily. Most affected areas, mainly in the south, have had water and electricity restored. Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek reported that over 1 billion baht (22 million) in compensation has already been distributed to more than 120,000 households. The transport ministry confirmed that parts of the southern railway network have reopened, although repairs continue on several flood-damaged sections.
Heavy rainfall in Indonesia and Sri Lanka is expected to persist throughout the week, potentially delaying helicopter access and increasing the risk of additional landslides.
