PARIS French authorities are currently probing an unauthorized drone incursion over the nation's nuclear submarine base on the Atlantic coast, officials reported Friday. According to French news outlets, multiple drones were spotted Thursday night above the le Longue base in Brittany, but military officials did not specify the number or models involved.
The le Longue base serves as the home port for France's four nuclear ballistic missile submarines: Le Triomphant, Le Tmraire, Le Vigilant, and Le Terrible.
Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin confirmed that base personnel successfully intercepted the drones, though she did not reveal the methods used, whether by electronic countermeasures, shooting, or other tactics. The origin of the flight remains unknown.
Overflights of military installations are strictly forbidden in our country, Vautrin stated. I commend the quick action taken by our forces at le Longue to neutralize this threat.
In recent months, several European Union nations have reported unusual drone activity in their skies. Some incidents prompted airport closures and flight disruptions, while others occurred near sensitive military sites. Various airspace breaches in countries such as Estonia and Poland have been attributed to Russia.
